The land of Macchiaioli

Fortulla wines come from one of the most enchanting places in Tuscany, where  the gentle hills dive into the Mediterranean Sea.
This area has always inspired artists.  The Macchiaioli movement, born in this very area at the end of the nineteenth century, was  a precursor of the French Impressionists.

According to local legend, artists stopped to paint the gorgeous Mediterranean scenery right on the path that goes to Castelnuovo through Poggio Pelato, where the Fortulla vineyards are located.
The best known painter of this movement was Giovanni Fattori (Livorno, September 6th 1825 – Florence, August 30th 1908), who often stayed in Castiglioncello on the estate of his friend, the art critic Diego Martelli.
